Since I have taught Philippine history for a couple of years before I went on to specialize on International Relations, visiting historical and cultural sites has always been on my travel bucket list. I have been to Cebu a couple of times (but some of them are for work), and most of the time I fail to visit historical and cultural sites that I have to check out in the place.
Cebu is a very important place in Philippine history because a lot of relevant events during the arrival of the Spanish colonizers in the country happened here. Given that, Cebu MUST be a part of every history buff’s travel bucket list.
So without further ado, I have identified 8 destination around the city which is very possible to visit within one whole day. Presenting the Cebu City Cultural Day Tour:
FORT SAN PEDRO
Fort San Pedro or Fuerza de San Pedro is one of the oldest fortresses in the Philippines. When the Spanish colonizers came to the Philippines, they built this structure to protect the island from pirates.
This structure is considered as the counterpart of Intramuros in Manila, and it is worthwhile to visit Fort San Pedro to learn how the Spanish colonization period happened in the Philippines. There were several paraphernalia exhibited there, and an interesting one I saw was the original Spanish Flag during the Battle of Manila Bay.
MAGELLAN’S CROSS

Magellan’s Cross is a structure built to commemorate Ferdinand Magellan’s introduction of Catholicism to the Philippines.
SANTO NINO BASILICA
Santo Nino Basilica is considered as the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. If you have heard of the popular Sinulog Festival, it is a feast celebrated honoring Santo Nino of Cebu.
CEBU METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral boasts a modern minimalist combined with classical cathedral architecture that is a must-see structure by travelers who love exploring architectural wonders.
HERITAGE OF CEBU MONUMENT

Heritage of Cebu Monument was a sculptural wonder created by Filipino artist Eduardo Castrillo commemorating the most important events in Philippine history.
CASA GORORDO MUSEUM

One of the most important and must-visit museums in Cebu City, Casa Gorordo gives us a glimpse of the life in the Philippines from 1860-1920 (from the Spanish colonial period to the early phases of the American colonial period). A lot of items and paraphernalia are exhibited to have a better feel of the life in the said period, including household items, kitchen utensils, clothing, books, paintings, etc.
Casa Gorordo also has a beautiful courtyard and garden with flowers which is a good spot to relax and unwind.
TEMPLE OF LEAH

Temple of Leah is a beautiful structure that is inspired by Greek architecture, and considered as one of the most popular tourist spots in Cebu. Amazing views of the Cebu City center can be seen here. It is also a nice spot to watch the sunset.
IT PARK
IT Park is not really a cultural destination in Cebu but this is the most recommended place to go to end your Cebu City Cultural Day Tour. I could compare IT Park to maybe Ortigas Business District or the Bonifacio Global City in Manila because it has shops, restaurants, and modern architecture. Night markets and bazaars are also present from time to time.
