24 HOURS IN BANGKOK, THAILAND

Before I came to know that Black Canyon Coffee Manila is primarily a Thai restaurant, I have an assumption that it is an American Tex-Mex restaurant because of its cowboy-ish logo and because of its name. It took me actually trying to dine in at this place to find out that it is a Thai restaurant. I never heard about Thailand being a coffee-producing country, so I was intrigued.

Black Canyon Coffee has several branches in Manila, but I was able to dine in at their branch at Ayala Malls the 30th. The location was easy to find. The place is not too big or too small but is very comfortable with the presence of soft couches and minimalist interior decoration.

THE FOOD

Since I dined in alone when I went to Black Canyon Coffee, I ordered the following food:

BAGOONG RICE (Php220)

black canyon coffee manila

I must say, the bagoong lover in me is very happy with this meal. Bagoong rice is a mandatory order in Thai restaurants and the quality of this meal did not fail my expectations.

PAD THAI (THAI-STYLE FRIED NOODLES WITH PRAWN) (Php285)

black canyon coffee manila

To be honest, I was a little shocked by its price, but it has so much prawns and it tastes like a legit Pad Thai served in Thai restaurants. I love Pad Thai and I love this Pad Thai.

THAI ICED TEA (Php130)

black canyon coffee manila

I could skip some Thai-grown coffee to taste some Thai tea. Thai tea is my favorite kind of tea and I’m happy that Black Canyon Coffee is serving such drink in a good quality.

THE VERDICT

The restaurant itself is a nice place to dine in because you will definitely enjoy your meal here. I think the price is a little to high, but I believe they kind of have a standard price here because it’s a franchise. But hey, I could assure that your money will be worth it because the taste of the food and the quality of the ingredients will definitely satisfy your Thai food cravings. Do consider dining in at Black Canyon Coffee when in Manila! Next time I will try their homegrown Thai coffee.

Have an Authentic Taste of Japan at Tokyo Bubble Tea

Raise your hands if you love Japanese food and if you are looking for a Japanese restaurant in Manila! I am here to give you guys a virtual tour of this very awesome Japanese restaurant in Quezon City in the name of Tokyo Bubble Tea.

An Awesome Restaurant in Quezon City

The presence of a Japanese restaurant in Manila, whether it’s right at the corner of a street, or a kiosk serving quick Japanese bites, is very common. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to dine at their restaurant in Quezon City at Tomas Morato Branch. They have several branches around Metro Manila, too – at Katipunan Blue Ridge, SM North EDSA The Block, and SM Megamall, to name a few.

Tokyo Bubble Tea

Upon entering the place, you will be greeted by its very courteous staff and will guide you to your table. For someone who has been to Japan, I would say that the place will give you an authentic vibe of a Japanese restaurant. The restaurant plays a Japanese playlist which adds to the Japan feels, and you also have the option to dine the Japanese way, that is, sitting on the floor.

Tokyo Bubble Tea

The pink lover in me is very happy because the interior is so kawaii!

Tokyo Bubble Tea: The Food

So, are you excited about the food that we ordered?

Tokyo Bubble Tea

Crunchy Midori Maki

Composed of Crunchy Ebi Fry Roll Topped With Kani Crunch and Ebiko

Tokyo Bubble Tea

I must say that this is not your ordinary maki because aside from it is larger in size, the kani crunch gives a way better status to it. I love how soft the kani crunch and can be eaten together with the maki.

Japanese Caesar Salad

Tokyo Bubble Tea

The tenderness of the chicken is perfect for the rest of the ingredients of this salad. The presence of the grapes gives it a special taste, not to mention the perfectly-tasting Caesar dressing.

Bulgogi Nachos

Tokyo Bubble Tea

I cannot imagine a concept of bulgogi nachos until I was able to taste one. This is highly-recommended!

Gyutendon

Composed of oishi crispy ebi tempura and tender slices of US beef in a special sauce with rich tomato chunks served on hot stone bowl rice

Tokyo Bubble Tea

The serving of gyutendon is big and I think most of those who have tried this would agree with me that a combination of tender beef and large shrimp tempura is a great idea. The tempura was not that greasy and is crispy enough.

Teriyaki Chicken Doria

Tokyo Bubble Tea

I am a fan of teriyaki and I must say this is a unique version. How the teriyaki sauce adds flavor to the rice is just right.

Strawberry Ice Cream Frappe

Tokyo Bubble Tea

I love the color pink hence I love strawberry-flavored stuff. Or perhaps I love strawberry-flavored stuff hence I love the color pink. Whichever. The presence of black pearls makes it stand out among typical frappe drinks, if you know what I mean. 😉 The ice cream adds creaminess to this lovely drink.

Chocolate Japanese Cheese Cake

Tokyo Bubble Tea

I have tasted a lot of chocolate drinks in my life, but this one is among the best. Not too sweet, not too sugary. The cheese cake factor in the drink blends just fine.

Desserts

Tokyo Bubble Tea Tomas Morato Branch has a Honeybon Café corner where you can order cakes with a variety of flavors to choose from. Yum!

Tokyo Bubble Tea: A Japanese Restaurant in Manila That is Worth a Try

If you want to experience a typical Japanese restaurant in Manila with your friends to just chill and perhaps to do some work (btw, in their restaurant in Quezon City at Tomas Morato branch, electric outlets are available in selected seats), then Tokyo Bubble Tea is the place for you. If you are hungry enough to eat big, Tokyo Bubble Tea menu items will guarantee you a full stomach because of its large serving. Tokyo Bubble Tea is also a place to be alone and have a ‘me time’. Kudos to the Tomas Morato team for being so kind and attentive enough to the needs of their customers. Yay!

SNAPSHOTS: Asia Photo Essay #7: MANILA FOOD DIARIES

manila food diaries

Food will always be a significant part of every trip I make, and whenever I’m not traveling elsewhere, I would still try to keep a “Manila Food Diaries” photo journal to keep track of the restaurants I ate, the people I was with, and what to recommend to friends and family later. Where’s Sherlyn? blog actually started as a food blog, in case you might be wondering, and a focus on travel did not drive away my focus on food. After all, I will always be happy to help you out find the best places to eat, inside and outside Manila.

Manila Food Diaries
TUNA PESTO (PHP220) AND CLASSIC MILK TEA (PHP70) AT BLACK SCOOP CAFE, MANILA. During this time, a new The Black Scoop Cafe just opened very near my old place, and since then it has been my go-to place whenever I’m craving for some milk tea and/or pesto, and whenever I want a change in work environment while doing some work. I will always love this combo and this will always be my comfort food. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
WANTON NOODLES SOUP (PHP150) AT WATER DROP TEA HOUSE, MANILA. A vegetarian colleague took me to this restaurant located inside the Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple in Pablo Ocampo Street, Malate. I love their wanton noodles soup so much! Unfortunately, as far as I know, they have closed down already. But nonetheless, check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
SWEET AND SOUR CAMARON (PHP140) AT RODY DAY’S RESTAURANT, MALABON CITY. I had the chance to dine in at Rody Day’s Restaurant, one of the oldest family-run restaurants in Malabon, when my sister took me to see her former colleague who married the grandson of the restaurant owners. This sweet and sour camaron is so yummy and healthy (I love shrimps!), and it also has other varieties, such as pork. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
MIKI BIHON GUISADO (PHP130) AT RODY DAY’S RESTAURANT, MALABON CITY. Another bestseller at Rody Day’s Restaurant is this Miki Bihon Guisado. Miki Bihon Guisado is a popular family treat and therefore people would usually order this in big amounts.Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
POUTINE POUTINE (PHP115) AT SOMETHINGSOMETHING, CALOOCAN CITY. Nearby my Mom’s ancestral home are small restaurants that seriously deserve some kind of an exposure. The first time I passed by SomethingSomething, I already fell in love with the super simple interior. They have a simple menu but everything comes with a twist. Whenever I crave for some poutine, I would go here. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
NASI GORENG BIG BREAKFAST (PHP380) and VEGETABLES PIZZA (PHP395) AT ANTIPODEAN, MAKATI CITY. A foreigner friend visiting Manila took me to this restaurant in Legazpi Village. It was my first time dining in the said place which was kind of intimidating at first. They have the whole menu written in chalkboard in one side of the restaurant. I was surprised to see a very international menu, and upon seeing nasi goreng, I did not check the rest of the menu. It was yummy and it has a twist: bacon. My friend ordered some vegetable pizza. Will go back here to try more items in the menu for sure. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
LUMPIANG SHANGHAI (PHP110) AT RODAY DAY’S RESTAURANT, MALABON CITY. Another classic Filipino bestseller at Rody Day’s Restaurant is the lumpiang shanghai. While some restaurants would only put a few amount of pork in their lumpiang shanghai, Rody Day’s lumpiang shanghai is not like that. It is very full of meat and it was dipped into a breading before frying which makes it even crispier. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
J.POPS AT J.CO DONUTS & COFFEE SM CITY NORTH EDSA, QUEZON CITY. J.Co Donut’s arrival here in the Philippines made my heart so happy because I love Indonesian food and brands. Also, it will be nice to try other brands of donuts which are less sweet. As an avid donut lover, I would always prefer donuts and drinks from J.Co. J.Pops are the cutest ever and it will always be one of my comfort foods. Check out their Zomato page here.

MERANTI HOTEL QUEZON CITY (Now Privato Quezon City) REVIEW

(Meranti Hotel Quezon City is now known as Privato Quezon City.)

‘Me time’ has always been in my vocabulary. I am always looking for some peace and quiet places in Metro Manila if I cannot afford to travel home in Batangas. Since I have been regularly jogging in Scout Area in Quezon City, I was able to pass by several hotels and restaurants. And that is when I saw some hotels in Quezon City and Meranti Hotel Quezon City (now Privato Quezon City) caught my attention.

Located at the quiet neighborhood of Scout Castor Street, Quezon City, I think Meranti Hotel Quezon City can give me the peacefulness I need. The view of the lobby from the outside is so inviting. Plus, it is close to establishments such as nice restaurants and convenience stores.

The Check-In Process

The check-in process was a breeze and the staff were really courteous and attentive. I did not have a prior reservation but I did not experience any hassle during the check-in process. Also, thank God they have available rooms that night. You will be served a welcome drink while waiting for your check-in to be processed.

Upon entering the room, I took photos of every corner. The walls are not white, surprise! But the lights give enough illumination to the room.

MERANTI HOTEL QUEZON CITY
HAHA excuse me while I take a mirror selfie :))

Another thing I loved about the room are the toiletries and the things written in it! It’s not as ordinary as reflecting the hotel logo with labels such as ‘shampoo’, ‘body wash’, and ‘soap’. For me this is so Instagram-worthy. But more than that, the toiletries are of high quality, especially the lotion.

I simply love the ambiance of the room. I can’t wait to pull off the sheets in my bed! Yay!

The Breakfast

I am a huge fan of hotel buffet breakfast because I am a huge eater like that (haha!), and I was really happy about the breakfast at Meranti Hotel Quezon City, number one, because, they have yummy and well-cooked crispy bacon!

They also serve other typical breakfast food such as fried rice, eggs, cereals, fresh fruits, and a variety of drinks. The breakfast area is located just beside the lobby.

Other Amenities

I have been hearing about beautiful the swimming pool is at Meranti Hotel Quezon City, however I did not get the chance to visit or use it. I checked for photos in the internet and yes, the swimming pool is really beautiful! I definitely have to go back to Meranti Hotel Quezon City for the swimming pool.

Meranti Hotel Quezon City: One of the most minimalist hotels in Quezon City

I only had an overnight stay at Meranti Hotel Quezon City and I would definitely want to come back. It is one of the hotels in Quezon City I can recommend for a perfect staycation place for family, for couples, or even for just you. The room, the food, the staff, the swimming pool – they are all great. You can book a hotel room for as low as Php3500.Meranti Hotel Quezon City, hence, is more than just a staycation place. It will also give you proper relaxation, a happy tummy, and an overall nice experience.

Where to Eat in Tomas Morato Area: Papa Kim’s Korean Bakery and Coffee

I am a frequent diner at Tomas Morato area and there is so much to recommend there — from Filipino restaurants, to Korean BBQ, to fine dining. However, if you want a chill Korean night with your friends while sharing some delicious food and drinks, I know such a place: Papa Kim’s Korean Bakery and Coffee.

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

Papa Kim’s Korean Bakery and Coffee is situated along Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City and they offer a vast selection of menu items, from starters, main dishes, drinks, and desserts.

Upon entering the place, you will be pleasantly greeted by their staff. Their interior really gives you a bakery vibe with the presence of brown chairs and the brick designs on their wall. Also, the music in the restaurant are your favorite K-Pop hits and K-Drama OSTs. Very Korean! 🙂

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

What I loved about Papa Kim’s is that they offer a wide selection of drinks. If you love something caffeinated, you can choose among the coffee frappes as well as the hot and iced coffee drinks. If you love cream-based drinks, they also have them in frappes. They also offer milk teas and fruit drinks, among others.

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

Since Papa Kim’s is also a bakery, they offer a lot of fresh breads, and the bread lover in me was really, really happy!

THE BEAR BREADS

What caught my attention upon entering the restaurant is the presence of bear pillows by the counter, and I was informed that they serve cute bear breads that come in different flavors.

Chocolate Bear Bread

The chocolate bear bread is soft and the chocolate filling is not that sweet.

The Custard Bear Bread

The custard bear bread is one of my favorites! It is so rich in custard filling.

BULGOGI SANDWICHES

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

For the bulgogi sandwiches, you can choose among chicken and beef and you can choose if you prefer a soft bread (bioche) or a hard bread (baguette).

Beef Bulgogi

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

The beef bulgogi sandwich here in Papa Kim’s is a unique concept for me because I am used to bulgogi meals which are served with rice. I never knew bulgogi can also be yummy with some bread and potato chips!

PASTA NOODLES AND ICE CREAM

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

Papa Kim’s also serve pasta and ice cream and these are something worth-trying.

Creamy Pesto

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

I am a pesto lover and I just cannot miss trying the creamy pesto here at Papa Kim’s. I love how the creaminess of the pesto is just right and I am happy with the amount of Parmesan cheese in the pesto. I also love the garlic bread! Yum!

Smoggy Ice Cream

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

Papa Kim’s ice cream is vanila with sprinkles and is served with some iced tea. It will be given to you while smoking (because there is dry ice in the bottom of the glass), hence the term ‘smoggy’ ice cream.

DRINKS

Berry Cheesecake

This is highly-recommended is one of the bestsellers of Papa Kim’s.

I was not able to try the coffee drinks of Papa Kim’s but it is something that you should not miss. Their coffee is available in so (small), jung (medium), and dae (large).

CAKES

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

Another specialty of Papa Kim’s is their unique selection of cakes, which are available in both slices and whole.

Blueberry Cheesecake

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

I am a lover of blueberry cheesecakes and all of them tastes the same. But this one, it tastes different. A must-try indeed.

Choco Cream Cheesecake

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

I love it when the chocolate is not really that sweet, and is complemented with just the right amount of creaminess.

Fresh Fruit Cake

Papa Kim's Korean Bakery and Coffee

I highly recommend this cake because it tastes so creamy and you will taste a lot of fresh fruits inside it. Yum!!

Why am I recommending Papa Kim’s Korean Bakery and Coffee again?

If you love a chill night out with your friends and/or family with some Korean music and a great selection of food (whether you want to eat heavy or just have some bread and dessert), then Papa Kim’s is the perfect place for you. The place is very accessible with public transportation and has a very comfortable interior. You can also have a wide selection of breads which you can take home. They offer 50% discount on breads from 9PM to 11PM. How cool is that?

Where To Eat in Quezon City: Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant

Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant
LIMBAGA 77 CAFE RESTAURANT

There will be times that you will get used to Filipino food (since they are cooked in your house every single day) to the point that you will always long for other types of food, like Japanese, Italian, and American, among others. I have tried several Filipino restaurants and the competition lies on how they put their respective ‘twists’ to common Filipino dishes. This is where eating Filipino food outside home sounds pretty much a nice idea. My journey to finding the perfect set of Filipino dishes with a twist led me to this quaint restaurant at Tomas Morato, Quezon City: Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant.

The name Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant actually came from the restaurants address: No. 77 Scout Limbaga, Quezon City. From the outside, the restaurant looks like a typical old-style Filipino home, which makes your dining experience authentically Filipino. As mentioned, they serve Filipino dishes and most of them are for sharing — perfect for families.

Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant
LIMBAGA 77 CAFE RESTAURANT

Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant also has an al fresco area in both first and second floors, and they have private rooms for big families or for those who want to hold meetings and activities. Its spiral wooden staircase is really nice. The brick walls with plants as well as the outdoor bar adds beauty to the restaurant.

Some of the bestsellers of Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant include Stuffed Bulaklak ng Kalabasa, Pochero, and the Limbaga 77 Baked Lechon Paksiw. And yes, they are not your ordinary Filipino dishes because Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant loves to add some twist on every item in their menu.

So, what did we order?

Stuffed Bulaklak ng Kalabasa

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

I am not a fan of bulaklak ng kalabasa or any vegetable I don’t usually eat, but I am surprised how this one tasted so good. The cheese lover in me was very happy with this menu item.

Bagoong Rice

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

Bagoong rice always reminds me of Thailand. I love bagoong and how it blended with the rice tastes just fine.

Pork Sisig

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

A typical Filipino sisig is served with egg, but by default, Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant serves it without an egg. But nothing to worry about, it can still be served with egg by request. What is special about this sisig is that it is crispier than the common sisig that’s usually served sizzling. It is easier to eat a crispy sisig, isn’t it?

Adobong Tadyang ng Baka

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

I have tasted several adobos in my life, but this one tastes different and special. Maybe I have not tasted a beef adobo, or maybe it’s the tadyang ng baka. I dunno, but it is something you should definitely order.

Perlas ng Mangga

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

This is like your typical mango sago dessert, but I love how the Perlas ng Mangga stands out among the others by being more creamy.

Minty Mango Watermelon

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

I love how the mint adds to the coldness of the shake. Mango and watermelon is a good combination, too.

Lychee Grapes Shake

limbaga 77 cafe restaurant

Before trying this yummy shake, I was skeptical about the combination of lychee and grapes, but is surprisingly tasted good!

The Verdict

Whether you are dining solo or with friends and family, I highly recommend giving Limbaga 77 Cafe Restaurant a try. Aside from the good food, the ambiance of the restaurant is perfect for a gastronomic bonding experience. I have not tried all their bestsellers yet and I think I will bring my family to this place next time. The staff were attentive to the needs of the customers and are very professional. So if you happen to be looking for a homey place to dine in Tomas Morato, this is the place to be.

Have a Formal and Fancy Night at Vitto’s Wine Bar and Restaurant

Attention, sommeliers! I think I have found the perfect place for you at the heart of Scout Area, Quezon City, and it’s Vitto’s Wine Bar and Restaurant!

I really love Scout Area in Quezon City because aside form it is my favorite jogging place, it has a lot of restaurants to choose from. Whenever I want to hang out with my friends based in Quezon City, I would never hesitate to suggest that we hang out at Tomas Morato or Scout Area. In this area, we could choose between eating in a Korean BBQ restaurant, Japanese restaurant, Filipino restaurant, or even either choose to drink either coffee, beer, or wine, depending on our mood!

long Scout Lozano Street is this very fancy place called Vitto’s Wine Bar and Restaurant. It is faced in a street where not many people pass by, which gives it a very quiet and peaceful vibe. With that, I hope Vitto’s would have advertisement signs, let’s say, along Timog Avenue or Tomas Morato Avenue.

The facade has a classy black minimalist theme, similar to some fancy restaurants you see in Europe. You will already feel the very good ambiance from the outside because of its rustic color scheme. I believe most wine restaurants have wood-ish rustic theme, but Vitto’s version is more minimalistic and therefore more claay.

VITTO'S WINE BAR AND RESTAURANT
VITTO’S WINE BAR AND RESTAURANT: The Bar

When you enter Vitto’s, it will give you a very nice Italian vibe. You can choose to sit in couches, high chairs, and even by the bar. Upon entering, you might assume that the place is small, but there is another area behind a camouflaged-door just on the left side of this wall art. You will not see it right away because it is covered in a couch-like leather thing.

VITTO'S WINE BAR AND RESTAURANT
VITTO’S WINE BAR AND RESTAURANT: Wall Art

They serve several kinds of wines and they actually have a lot of food in their menu. Oh, they also have Illy’s coffee products in their menu, too. To be honest I am still working on learning my wine vocabulary (because I don’t really drink! huhu), so I am trying here to focus on the food instead.

So, what did we order?

Other Important Information About Vittos

Vitto’s values customer feedback, and you can answer their customer feedback form at the paper place mats in your tables. In terms of parking, it can be difficult to park in the area (which is common among the restaurants in Scout Area/Tomas Morato) hence during peak hours, you might have to think twice before bringing your car.
