Black Canyon Coffee Philippines (Review)

24 HOURS IN BANGKOK, THAILAND

Before I came to know that Black Canyon Coffee Manila is primarily a Thai restaurant, I have an assumption that it is an American Tex-Mex restaurant because of its cowboy-ish logo and because of its name. It took me actually trying to dine in at this place to find out that it is a Thai restaurant. I never heard about Thailand being a coffee-producing country, so I was intrigued.

OVERALL AMBIANCE

Black Canyon Coffee has several branches in Manila, but I was able to dine in at their branch at Ayala Malls the 30th. The location was easy to find. The place is not too big or too small but is very comfortable with the presence of soft couches and minimalist interior decoration.

They have a lot of caffeine and non-caffeine drinks to choose from. I learned that the coffee served in Black Canyon Coffee came from the agricultural projects under the Thai Royal Patronage. The coffee in this restaurant are indeed locally-grown. Awesome!

THE FOOD

Since I dined in alone when I went to Black Canyon Coffee, I ordered the following food:

BAGOONG RICE (Php220)

black canyon coffee manila

I must say, the bagoong lover in me is very happy with this meal. Bagoong rice is a mandatory order in Thai restaurants and the quality of this meal did not fail my expectations.

PAD THAI (THAI-STYLE FRIED NOODLES WITH PRAWN) (Php285)

black canyon coffee manila

To be honest, I was a little shocked by its price, but it has so much prawns and it tastes like a legit Pad Thai served in Thai restaurants. I love Pad Thai and I love this Pad Thai.

THAI ICED TEA (Php130)

black canyon coffee manila

I could skip some Thai-grown coffee to taste some Thai tea. Thai tea is my favorite kind of tea and I’m happy that Black Canyon Coffee is serving such drink in a good quality.

THE VERDICT

The restaurant itself is a nice place to dine in because you will definitely enjoy your meal here. I think the price is a little to high, but I believe they kind of have a standard price here because it’s a franchise. But hey, I could assure that your money will be worth it because the taste of the food and the quality of the ingredients will definitely satisfy your Thai food cravings. Do consider dining in at Black Canyon Coffee when in Manila! Next time I will try their homegrown Thai coffee.

SNAPSHOTS: Asia Photo Essay #7: MANILA FOOD DIARIES

manila food diaries

Food will always be a significant part of every trip I make, and whenever I’m not traveling elsewhere, I would still try to keep a “Manila Food Diaries” photo journal to keep track of the restaurants I ate, the people I was with, and what to recommend to friends and family later. Where’s Sherlyn? blog actually started as a food blog, in case you might be wondering, and a focus on travel did not drive away my focus on food. After all, I will always be happy to help you out find the best places to eat, inside and outside Manila.

Manila Food Diaries
TUNA PESTO (PHP220) AND CLASSIC MILK TEA (PHP70) AT BLACK SCOOP CAFE, MANILA. During this time, a new The Black Scoop Cafe just opened very near my old place, and since then it has been my go-to place whenever I’m craving for some milk tea and/or pesto, and whenever I want a change in work environment while doing some work. I will always love this combo and this will always be my comfort food. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
WANTON NOODLES SOUP (PHP150) AT WATER DROP TEA HOUSE, MANILA. A vegetarian colleague took me to this restaurant located inside the Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple in Pablo Ocampo Street, Malate. I love their wanton noodles soup so much! Unfortunately, as far as I know, they have closed down already. But nonetheless, check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
SWEET AND SOUR CAMARON (PHP140) AT RODY DAY’S RESTAURANT, MALABON CITY. I had the chance to dine in at Rody Day’s Restaurant, one of the oldest family-run restaurants in Malabon, when my sister took me to see her former colleague who married the grandson of the restaurant owners. This sweet and sour camaron is so yummy and healthy (I love shrimps!), and it also has other varieties, such as pork. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
MIKI BIHON GUISADO (PHP130) AT RODY DAY’S RESTAURANT, MALABON CITY. Another bestseller at Rody Day’s Restaurant is this Miki Bihon Guisado. Miki Bihon Guisado is a popular family treat and therefore people would usually order this in big amounts.Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
POUTINE POUTINE (PHP115) AT SOMETHINGSOMETHING, CALOOCAN CITY. Nearby my Mom’s ancestral home are small restaurants that seriously deserve some kind of an exposure. The first time I passed by SomethingSomething, I already fell in love with the super simple interior. They have a simple menu but everything comes with a twist. Whenever I crave for some poutine, I would go here. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
NASI GORENG BIG BREAKFAST (PHP380) and VEGETABLES PIZZA (PHP395) AT ANTIPODEAN, MAKATI CITY. A foreigner friend visiting Manila took me to this restaurant in Legazpi Village. It was my first time dining in the said place which was kind of intimidating at first. They have the whole menu written in chalkboard in one side of the restaurant. I was surprised to see a very international menu, and upon seeing nasi goreng, I did not check the rest of the menu. It was yummy and it has a twist: bacon. My friend ordered some vegetable pizza. Will go back here to try more items in the menu for sure. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
LUMPIANG SHANGHAI (PHP110) AT RODAY DAY’S RESTAURANT, MALABON CITY. Another classic Filipino bestseller at Rody Day’s Restaurant is the lumpiang shanghai. While some restaurants would only put a few amount of pork in their lumpiang shanghai, Rody Day’s lumpiang shanghai is not like that. It is very full of meat and it was dipped into a breading before frying which makes it even crispier. Check out their Zomato page here.
Manila Food Diaries
J.POPS AT J.CO DONUTS & COFFEE SM CITY NORTH EDSA, QUEZON CITY. J.Co Donut’s arrival here in the Philippines made my heart so happy because I love Indonesian food and brands. Also, it will be nice to try other brands of donuts which are less sweet. As an avid donut lover, I would always prefer donuts and drinks from J.Co. J.Pops are the cutest ever and it will always be one of my comfort foods. Check out their Zomato page here.

Where To Eat and Stay in Makati City: City Garden Grand Hotel (Review)

Good food, perfect me time, nice ambiance, and complete and cool amenities.

This is how I can describe my experience at City Garden Grand Hotel in a nutshell. Situated at the heart of Poblacion, Makati City, I can guarantee that it can give you the best staycation experience here in Metro Manila. It is close to malls such as the A.Venue Mall, drugstores, and convenience stores. Its 32-floor building is full of awesome stuff that can make the guest have a satisfying stay.

City Garden Grand Hotel: The Check-in Process

City Garden Grand Hotel

If you have a prior reservation, then the check-in process will be a breeze. I arrived at late afternoon just right before the sunset and I was happily accommodated by the reception staff. I was asked by my identification card and I was provided the card key to my room. There is an option not to give a security deposit, in which case you have to pay in cash if you will avail some food at the restaurant or a massage.

City Garden Grand Hotel: My Room

Upon entering the room and dropping off my bag, I hurriedly went to the window to see the view outside. Since it is time for the sun to set, I saw a beautiful skyline of Makati city by the window. I bet it looks good at night.

City Garden Grand Hotel

The room has two beds, a vanity/study desk, a cabinet, and a bathroom. I love how good-smelling the room is, how every furniture is arranged properly, and how the lighting of the room is just right for relaxation.

In the cabinet, there is a flat iron for your clothes and a vault to place your valuables.

What surprised me with this room is when I opened one of the drawers of the study table, I actually found some basic office supplies! There are scissors, glue, scotch tape, and paper clips. And since I am doing some work in my room that night, I found them very useful.

I love how relaxing the feeling is while you are in your swimsuit in the water while watching the sun set behind the buildings in Makati.

City Garden Grand Hotel: Dinner at Firefly Roofdeck

City Garden Grand Hotel

Located at the 32nd floor of the hotel, this restaurant has a great view of Makati City skyline. They have a live band performing to entertain the guests and they sang really nice songs. You can also watch some sports by the bar.

Upon entering Firefly Roofdeck, I was happily assisted by the Manager on-duty and let me choose my table. He even offered me the option to sit upstairs but I prefer the one downstairs since it is close to the buffet. He even gave me a mini-tour of the buffet. Upon seeing the lechon, the creamy pesto pasta, and the breads and blueberry cheesecake, that’s when I decided to avail the buffet instead of ala carte meals. I heard their best option there is the seafood paella.

There is a vast set of buffet food which is primarily composed of Spanish and Filipino food. There are pastas, rice, meat, different types of cheese, salad, and some dessert. The ala carte menu also offers a huge selection of food ranging from pica-pica to rice meals. They also have alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. For the ala carte menu, I tried Nachos Ala Queen and the Irish Coffee and they tasted really good!

City Garden Grand Hotel
City Garden Grand Hotel

The Firefly Roofdeck is a large area which can accommodate more than 50 people but I really admire how the staff were able to manage giving a fast and quality service to the needs of all the guests. They were courteous, professional and attentive enough in responding to the guests.

City Garden Grand Hotel Breakfast at Spice Cafe

City Garden Grand Hotel

I am a lover of breakfast buffets and I have to say that this is one of the best breakfast buffets that I have tried so far here in Metro Manila. I came down to Spice Cafe at 6AM sharp since I have to check-out early and I was surprised that the buffet was all set, in fact I spent the first hour being the only person in the area.

City Garden Grand Hotel

The staff were very courteous and will happily greet you upon entering the place. They will ask if you want some coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and it will be served to your table. The breakfast buffet has a vast selection of food and they all look yummy but you can’t just try them all because they are just too many.

Bacon is something I am always looking forward to in every breakfast buffet, and Spice Cafe did not fail me because they serve the crispiest bacon ever. I partnered it with some pancake and blueberry spread. Yum! I was also able to try their pizza, salad, and bread.

The Verdict

City Garden Grand Hotel is a place for a perfect staycation experience in Metro Manila. the hospitality of the staff and the complete set of amenities is what makes it stand out among other hotels in the city. It is perfect for all kinds of travelers — whether you are a solo traveler, a couple traveler, or a traveler with a family. Every penny is worth spending in this place. Highly recommended!
