A Complete Guide to 38 Instagram-Worthy Spots in Bicol Region, Philippines

Bicol Region, Philippines (composed of 6 provinces – Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Catanduanes) is one local destination I will always keep on coming back to travel – the food is great, the views are spectacular, the people are naturally kind, and there will always be new places to see. This is nothing but a typical provincial area in the Philippines, but there is some kind of a magic spell in this place which makes me go back here over and over again. Legazpi City would of course be my favorite, but Naga City is also a nice place, and I like the quaintness of Daet town.

Since I’ve been to this area a few times, I would like to share the spots I’ve been to when I went to travel to Bicol, Philippines, specifically in the provinces of Albay, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur. Forgive me if I haven’t visited the rest of the Bicol region, but I will try my best to visit them next time so that I could complete this list. But in the meantime, enjoy the best spots on my list from the three provinces I’ve been to.

Tip: the sunset view here is also perfect.

WHERE TO STAY IN BICOL REGION?

Legazpi City Museum: A Must-See In Bicol Region, Philippines

Are you visiting Legazpi City soon? Get to know the city better by visiting Legazpi City Museum!

As a history buff and history professor, my number one agenda whenever visiting a new place is to check if there are museums that can be visited.

I scored a very cheap flight going to Legazpi City via Cebu Pacific where I also had the chance to fly on a holiday, hence I don’t need to file for a leave of absence from work. To be honest, I am not in any way looking forward to visit the city in the past, but after several visits, I fell in love and I kept on coming back over and over again.

Upon arrival at Legazpi Airport, I rode a tricycle going to the Legazpi City Hall because I saw online that there is a city museum in the building. Apparently, the Provincial Capitol of Albay was also in the same vicinity. I went to the City Tourism Office to ask for information, but sadly they were a little surprised to know that some crazy girl came all the way down to the city just for a little museum excursion.

“Saan ka pa nanggaling niyan?” (“Where did you travel from?”) The employee from the tourism office asked me, since I’m still carrying my JanSport backpack with me. Hey, I came straight from the airport. πŸ˜€

I answered, “Sa Batangas po.” (“From Batangas”), but I actually came from a flight from Manila. I mistakenly mentioned that I traveled from my hometown, so the officer assumed I took the bus going to Legazpi.

“Ang layo naman ng pinanggalingan mo.” He replied. Despite my “surprise” visit that day, they happily accommodated me and opened the museum exclusively for my visit.

Legazpi City Museum

Anyway, let’s skip to the more important part, they pointed me to the other building (the City Hall Annex Building) where the Legazpi City Museum is located. They also told me that there is a museum at Tabaco which I was not able to check out.

Legazpi City Museum

It turns out that the Legazpi City Museum is the only public museum in Bicol Region. It houses several archaeological artifacts, religious items, as well as old photographs and artworks by Bicolano artists which showcase the rich history of the region.

I could tell that the museum was not really that maintained and not that promoted, hence not known by locals and tourists alike. As of writing, I think the museum was already renovated and reopened to visitors.

Different artworks such as photos, paintings, and sculptures are present that depict the Bicolano history and culture.

It’s also amazing to see vintage photos of Mayon Volcano featuring its past eruptions and its very beautiful perfect shape. Btw, Mayon Volcano eruption has been attracting foreign tourists in the past. Yes, tourists would travel to Bicol to watch the eruption of Mayon Volcano.

Legazpi City Museum
Legazpi City Museum

I have a very blurry memory about the epic Ibalon from my Grade School Filipino class, but I can still remember that Bicolanos have a reputation being mighty and strong since they have fought a lot of battles in the past and they have been resilient against different natural disasters such as the past eruptions of Mayon Volcano and regular typhoons.

I suggest both Bicolanos and non-Bicolanos should check this place out to have a glimpse of the rich Bicolano heritage, including their history and all the cultural identity that they have today. I also hope that more artifacts and artworks by Bicolanos could be displayed here for viewing, assuming they were properly preserved.

SNAPSHOTS: Asia Photo Essay #4: AN ARTS AND CULTURE TOUR OF LEGAZPI CITY

legazpi city

Bicol Region in the Philippines (consists of the provinces of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Catanduanes) is one of the most beautiful regions in the Philippines. Personally, this is also the place I keep on coming back to. I love the calmness of the provinces (even the most urban ones), I love the cuisine, I love the prevalence of spicy food, and I love the historical and natural sites they have. In one of the holidays, I decided to have a quick getaway to Legazpi City to learn about its culture and people. I have checked out some of the museums in the area, but there were only a few ones. But nonetheless, I still managed to go around and see the things that are unique to Bicol Region. I had a mini-Arts and Culture tour in one of my days in Legazpi City.

HELLO, MAYON VOLCANO! The popular beautiful volcano with a ‘perfect cone shape’ as seen from a Manila-Legazpi flight during the final descent. I bet this is more beautiful if it’s a sunny day! This is the kind of welcome I wished for myself if I have the chance to go to Bicol, and here I am. Yay!

THE BATTLE OF LEGAZPI MURAL AT THE CITY MUSEUM: One of my first agenda upon landing in Legazpi and checking in at my hostel is to visit museums. My noob traveling skills during that time has led me to visit the City Hall and ask the Tourism Office if they have a museum in the area. Aside from weird stares from the employees screaming “This girl came all the way here to visit museums”, I was told that they have one but they never open it up to the public. But behold, they opened it just for me. Yay! I saw a lot of memorabilia, historical artifacts, paintings and stuff. I wish the Philippine government will pour more funds to maintain community museums like this one.

BIGG’S DINER. Bigg’s is a fastfood chain in Bicol region with branches in Batangas province. It’s a typical American diner chain, but it’s known for its awesome unique interior design and yummy meals, of course. I kept coming back to Bigg’s whenever I’m in Batangas or Bicol. This is something Bicol is known for.

A RANDOM ARTWORK IN AN OPEN AIR EXHIBIT AT EMBARCADERO. Embarcadero is known as a place where locals could hang out and shop and is very close to the popular Legazpi Boulevard with a very awesome nightlife by the ocean. When I went there to buy my parents some souvenir, I saw artworks in the atrium probably created by students, and all of them symbolizes something about Bicol Region. I took a picture of this Mayon Volcano artwork. Beautiful!

STREET FOOD STRIP AT PENARANDA PARK. Every afternoon, students, workers, and groups of friends would gather at Penaranda Park as the street food stalls would open. This is a typical Filipino thing (not only in Legazpi), which also serves as a nice bonding experience. This is something I always recommend to foreign friends visiting the Philippines. Also, eating street food in the Philippines might be a scary idea for outsiders, but it may be one of the most beautiful experience there is.
Arts and Culture Travel Legazpi City
CHILI ICE CREAM (LEVEL 1) AT 1ST COLONIAL GRILL. Bicol Region is known to be the Chili Capital of the Philippines, and Bicolanos take pride in having a generally spicy cuisine. 1st Colonial Grill is another chain of restaurants in Bicol Region (and they just opened up branches in Manila) which is popular for the Chili Ice Cream. You can choose the level of spiciness (1, 2, or 3), and they will ‘mark’ your ice creams with the level of spiciness with chilis. My very first chili ice cream is a level one as shown, but later I always have fun ordering level 3.
Arts and Culture Travel Legazpi City
ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHEDRAL. Just near the City Hall is the Catedral de San Gregorio Magno which is a beautiful old Catholic church. Old churches are a thing in the Philippines because the Spanish colonial government has ordered to build at least one church per municipality or city. I always try my best to see old churches and appreciate their beauty. I wish I have a better camera but it looks so perfect at nighttime.
Arts and Culture Travel Legazpi City
NIGHTTIME SCENE AT LEGAZPI. A further walk from Penaranda Park will take you to more food stalls with seats where you can have your typical Filipino street food/dinner. This is part of the night market, so the day starts here after the sunset. You will typically see locals here bonding over food. Life seems simple in Bicol region and at the same time happy. Whenever I visit Bicol region, my life just slows down, and I always love that feeling.
